Nickel-phosphorus (NIP)

If more than 10 percent phosphorus is also built into the nickel matrix, a crystal-free structure is created. This amorphous structure, also known as "metallic glass", has, in addition to its high hardness due to the crystal-free structure, the best possible reproduction in the field of fine engraving and is used in optical applications, among other things. With a thermal aftertreatment at 300 degrees Celsius, the hardness increases to 900 HV1.

The nickel-phosphorus layers have a lower ductility than bright nickel.
